We are proud to present our 6th 'Business of the Month' Bambino City, Debden.

Clinic Manager Laura recently met with owner Sara to discuss the importance of parents and carers taking care of their bodies in the early years. They discussed the injuries and niggles that occur in this time whilst looking after babies and young children.

Take a look below at Sara's thoughtful answers to support our Nursery Fit campaign:

1. What does being “Nursery Fit” mean to you at Bambino City?

To me, being Nursery Fit isn’t about being super fit or spending hours in the gym. It’s about having the strength, mobility and energy to enjoy these early years with your child without your body constantly aching. Becoming a parent introduces a whole new range of movements that many people simply aren’t used to and your body suddenly has to adapt.

2. What physical challenges do you see parents dealing with during the early years stage?

If you’re already active, your body generally adapts much more easily. But for many new parents it’s a real shock to the system. You’re constantly lifting babies and toddlers, carrying changing bags, pushing prams, getting up and down from the floor and bending over countless times a day.

When babies start crawling, you’re forever chasing them while crouching or bending over. Then comes the walking stage, where they want to hold one or both of your hands as they build confidence. You’re often walking bent over for weeks or even months, which can really take its toll on your back, shoulders and neck.

3. Why is it important for parents to look after their own mobility, strength and energy levels during the nursery years?

Because these years are physically demanding every single day. Looking after yourself means you’re able to enjoy those precious moments rather than just getting through them. I remember becoming a parent and experiencing neck spasms and back pain for the first time in my life, simply from carrying Noah, using a baby sling and constantly lifting him. It’s something nobody really warns you about.

4. Play is such an important part of preparing children for nursery, but parents are often joining in too. What movements do you notice parents doing most during play?

Definitely lots of bending, squatting, sitting on the floor and getting back up again! At Bambino City we also notice that many parents don’t go into the soft play frame with their children because they’re worried they won’t be able to climb around or get back out comfortably, even though our frame is designed to safely support adults too. Confidence in your own mobility makes such a difference when it comes to joining in with your child’s play.

5. What advice would you give parents to stay active and comfortable while keeping up with their little ones?

Don’t underestimate how physical parenting really is. You don’t have to become an athlete, but spending a little time looking after your own body can make a huge difference. Simple strength and mobility exercises can help protect your back, hips and shoulders and make everyday parenting much easier.

If you’re experiencing aches, stiffness or recurring pain, don’t ignore it. Seeking advice from professionals, such as the team at SV Sports Therapy, can help keep you moving comfortably so you can focus on enjoying time with your children rather than managing pain.

Thank you so much Sara for these amazing responses!
