We recently caught up with Emma Broadbent, who is the Challenges and Events Fundraiser at St Clare Hospice (SCH).
As our main contact at the charity, we thought we'd fire a few questions at her, to better explain the relationship between SV and SCH, and to highlight the wonderful work they do at the hospice.
When did SCH start working with SV?
Although it's before my time, the relationship between SV and the hospice started in 2013 when SV first supported our London Marathon runners.
What does the partnership involve now?
The SV team still supports our marathon runners by attending information evenings that we organise and by providing advice on training, recovery, stretching, etc. SV also sponsors our 10K run event in April each year, and provides our runners with pre and post run sports massages in return for donations, which goes directly to the hospice.
What does SCH do?
St Clare Hospice is a charity providing specialist palliative care to improve the lives of people living with a terminal or life-limiting illness in West Essex and East Hertfordshire, including Bishop’s Stortford and Sawbridgeworth. Our approach to care gives patients, their families and carers, the confidence to cope so that, together, they can enjoy the best possible quality of life, whether at home or in the hospice. With limited NHS funding, we need to raise most of the money it costs each year to provide our vital services. We therefore rely on our local community to help us raise money each year so we can continue being there for local families facing one of the most difficult journeys in life.
How much money do you have to raise each year to operate?
It costs £4.1 million each year to provide our vital services. We only receive limited NHS funding, so we have to fundraise much of this ourselves. In 2016/17, of every £1 spent, 89p went directly on care for our patients and their families; 11p went on generating funds and income.
How can people help?
People can donate, volunteer, fundraise, participate in one of our events, sponsor an event...
What events have you got coming up?
