Last week Sophie had the pleasure of meeting 9 St Clare Hospice London marathon runners for 2024.
Everyone shared with the group their current training journey and their reasons why they signed up to run next year's marathon! Can you believe it's less than 22 weeks to go?!
So, what were Sophie's top tips?!
Get a running gait assessment from a specialist running shop to check you are wearing the correct trainers.
Don't wait until January 2024 to start your training. Start now! Little and often. Join your local Parkrun, join a local running club - we highly recommend Orion Harriers.
Choose/make a structured running plan that suits your life. If you know you can't run 5 days per week due to work/childcare/life then don't choose this plan. Choose wisely!
Dynamic warm up pre running for your legs, to increase blood and warmth to your muscles and joints and enhance mobility.
Experiment with what types of food sit well in your gut before you run and how long you feel you need to wait between eating and then running.
Comparison is the thief of joy - don't set yourself up for 'failure' and compare yourself to a friend who ran the marathon in 3:30 hrs and you are aiming to run it is 5 hours!
Listen to your body. If someone hurts (and really hurts!), your body is giving you a warning sign. Rest and seek medical advice from a Sports Therapist rather than playing the 'guessing game'.
Hydration and optimising your immune system to combat colds and viruses during your training is key.
Add a regular sports massage to optimise your recovery. Here at SV Sports Therapy we specialise in sports massage. Some of our clients have a weekly sports massage, others fortnightly or monthly, all depending on time and finances. A sports massage is a great way to help enhance injury prevention and allow your muscles to recover during your running volume.
Go and enjoy it! Know that the training is going to hard, stressful at times but will absolutely be worth it. Remember your why!!!!
